Why an executive LinkedIn profile is a different job from a resume

A resume is read once, by someone who already has your application in front of them. A LinkedIn profile is found, usually by someone who was not looking for you specifically, and it has to work with no context at all.

That changes what it has to do. It has to be discoverable for the searches recruiters actually run, and it has to make sense to a board member who clicked your name after a meeting and knows nothing about you.

How recruiters actually find you

Through search, using titles, skills and keywords, on a platform that ranks profiles against every other profile in your role and industry. Being excellent and being findable are separate problems, and most senior profiles solve only the first.

The practical consequence is that the words matter. A headline that says nothing beyond your job title is the most common reason a strong executive never appears in the search that would have found them.

If your search is confidential, settings come first

Editing a profile broadcasts to your network by default, and that network includes the people you work with. Before any writing happens, activity broadcasts are turned off, and the public Open To Work frame stays off for the whole search.

This is the most common way a quiet search stops being quiet, and it happens in the first five minutes. The confidential search playbook covers the full method.

What you get

A profile written with you rather than from a template, built after your positioning is settled so it says the same thing as your resume and the way you introduce yourself.

Profile writing is often taken alongside the value proposition work, because the proposition is what the profile is built to express.

LinkedIn questions

Will editing my LinkedIn profile tell my employer I am looking?

It can, and that is handled first. Activity broadcasts are turned off before anything is edited, and the public Open To Work photo frame is not used during a confidential search.

How is this different from just updating my job history?

A history lists what you did. A profile has to argue what you are good at, to someone who found you by search and has no other context. Those are different pieces of writing.

Do I need a new resume as well?

Not necessarily, but they must agree. When the profile and the resume tell different stories the candidacy reads as vague, even when the record is strong.

Does the headline really matter that much?

Yes. It is the most heavily weighted text on the profile for search, and it is the one line that appears everywhere your name does.

Can you write it in my voice?

That is the point. It is written with you, from your material, and you approve every line. It should sound like you on a good day, not like a brochure.
