Personal Branding in Westchester

A value proposition and a LinkedIn presence that make your candidacy unmistakable, and consistent everywhere someone checks.

What personal branding means at this level

It is not self-promotion. It is making sure that when your name comes up in a room you are not in, the person who mentions you can describe what you are good at in one sentence, and that the sentence is the one you would have chosen.

Everything else follows from that sentence. The resume, the LinkedIn profile and the way you introduce yourself are three expressions of one proposition, and when they disagree the candidacy feels vague even when the record is strong.

Why LinkedIn is the second document

It is the first place a recruiter, a hiring executive and a board member all look, and it is the only one of the three that is public and permanent. A profile that reads as a job history rather than an argument is a missed opportunity on every search.

It also carries a confidentiality dimension. Editing a profile broadcasts to your network by default, which is why the settings are handled before the writing starts.

What is included

The Westchester market

Westchester runs on a corporate spine through White Plains, Armonk, Purchase and Harrison, with healthcare systems, consumer products and financial services holding the largest senior headcounts. It is close enough to Manhattan that most searches here end up spanning both, and far enough that the local network behaves like its own market.

The practical consequence is that a Westchester target list is almost never only Westchester. It usually reaches across the border into Fairfield County and down into the city, because the executive talent pool moves freely across all three and the same recruiters cover them.

Clients come from Scarsdale, Rye, Bronxville, Chappaqua, Larchmont and White Plains, and the target lists usually reach wider than the county line.

Meeting in person, or not

Most Westchester engagements run on video, which is what senior clients prefer for scheduling. When meeting in person is worth it, Linda is a short drive or a Metro-North connection away in Connecticut, on the same rail corridor that serves the Harlem and Hudson lines.

Linda Van Valkenburgh holds five career-coaching certifications (MS, CCMC, CJSS, CSMCS, CELDC) and is an invited Executive Career Coach Expert for the CEO Trust community of chief executives. Every engagement starts the same way: a free assessment, then a complimentary thirty-minute consultation. Most clients are employed and running a confidential search, so discretion is built into how the work runs.

Questions Westchester executives ask

Will editing my LinkedIn tell my employer I am looking?

It can, and that is the first thing handled. Activity broadcasts are turned off before any edit, and the public Open To Work frame is not used during a confidential search.

I am not comfortable posting publicly. Does this still work?

Yes. Visibility is not the same as posting. A precise profile and a clear proposition do most of the work, and plenty of senior clients never publish a thing.

Is this different from the resume work?

It comes first. Branding settles the proposition, and the resume and profile express it. Doing it in the other order is why documents end up vague.

Do you work with executives across the New York metro?

Yes. Most Westchester engagements run on video, which is what senior clients prefer for scheduling. When meeting in person is worth it, Linda is a short drive or a Metro-North connection away in Connecticut, on the same rail corridor that serves the Harlem and Hudson lines.
